Harvester Command Element

Temporary Ops Center

Bulldog Four

Chhun scanned his battle board and the myriad assets at his disposal. Vindicator drones were almost set to fly but wouldn’t get there in the time needed to save the first sergeant and his team.

Meanwhile, the temporary ops center was starting to look a lot more permanent as more and more elements coming down from Centurion began staging near Chhun. Combat sleds, additional legionnaires, and a score of other munitions and supplies were piling up. But none of that would do any good when it came to helping Kill Team Victory unless Chhun could come up with a plan. And thinking of that wasn’t getting any easier given the commotion that was taking place outside the dropship.

The general could sense his armored admin bot nearby. “Chaz, what’s going on out there?”

“Sir, recovery teams have just returned with the downed pilots that got us to the planet. All were wounded and won’t be flying again today. One was severely concussed after ejecting. That’s the man screaming outside. He’s adamant he gets back into the fight.”

Chhun stepped out of the dropship into the middle of the argument, and everyone took a step back at the sight of their task force commander.

“Name, pilot,” Chhun barked. Then he saw the man’s face and declared, “Commander Danns.”

Dax Danns had flown a mission in support of Chhun when he was still on Kill Team Victory. He had fought it out as long as he could when the Cybar appeared and very nearly wiped out Dark Ops altogether. He was a good man.

“Aye, sir!” Danns barked back.

Chhun turned on one of his legionnaires. “Tag and track, Leej.”

“LS-731-Victor, sir. Call sign Knox.”

“You’re the Valkyrie team leader. Is Commander Danns good to go?”

“General, I wouldn’t let any of these men fly today after what they’ve been through. It could be a risk to them as well as the mission, sir.”

Chhun turned to Danns with a no-nonsense look. “Commander?”

The pilot brought his A-game. “I took a hard hit, sir. The ref is gonna start countin’, that’s his job. But this was a slip, not a fall. You let me climb into that bird and I’ll choke-slam the sky, sir.”

Chhun couldn’t help but smile. Back before he’d become Legion commander, he’d blown off steam as one of the premier combatants in his weight class in the LCT. Legion combatives training was standard for all legionnaires, but there were those like Chhun who took it a step further and fought for pride in what passed for an amateur fighting federation onboard the various destroyers he jumped across the galaxy in while in Victory Company as a sergeant.

Legion Combat Tournaments were a way for members of the Legion to test their mettle against the only opponent in the Republic capable of giving them a challenge: themselves. Back in the day, Chhun was legend in the Legion for his ferocity and tactical ability, and some of those old holovids still circulated.

Whether Danns somehow knew all of this—Chhun was as
